Saigon Day 16 – Day trip to Temple and Viet-cong tunnels

by Joel Goldstein on October 16, 2009

  • Got up bright and early for our day trip around 7:15
  • Had a good breakfast and headed out on the bus
  • Got stuck in traffic on the way to the temple and had to leave early to make up time
  • Saw a ceremony at the temple, very interesting religion
  • Had lunch on the way to the tunnels
  • Couldn’t stand the tour guide he repeated every word a the end of his sentances… Example: This area is home to two thousand people, two thousand people. They are good farmers and have lots of land, lots of land. etc… Very annoying
  • Bus driver can’t figure out how to use the breaks and has 2 motions for them… On and Off.
  • Started pouring as we arrived to the Viet-cong tunnels
  • Saw a propaganda film and felt as if the Vietnamese were trying to present it to us as real… Offended level 1
  • Toured the types of traps they set for Americans… Tour guide is smiling as he points out the torture… Offended level 2
  • Brings us to a blown up American tank… cool, however getting  very fed up with Vietnamese
  • Headed to the firing range where it cost me 260,000 dong about $15 to shoot a clip out of the AK-47.
  • They used headphones with the cords cut off as ear protection… didn’t work.
  • Hit the targets dead on, gun kept jamming though
  • Went to the tunnels finally
  • Amazed at how they dug these around the entire area
  • Went down into the tunnels, however we were too tall and after about 75 yards of crouching we headed up.
  • Took a long bus ride home… got stuck in more traffic, didn’t get back until 9pm
  • Ate dinner where Bill Clinton ate when he came in 2000.
  • Wrote the last weeks blog entries and went to bed… : )
